Biological Dentistry

What Is Biological Dentistry?

In using the term Biological Dentistry, we are not attempting to stake out a new specialty for dentistry but rather to describe a philosophy that can apply to all facets of dental practice and to health care in general: Always seek the safest, least toxic way to accomplish the mission of treatment, all the goals of modern dentistry, and do it while treading as lightly as possible on the patient’s biological terrain.

A more biocompatible approach to oral health is the hallmark of biological dentistry.

We operate according to the belief system that your teeth are an integral part of your body and hence your overall health and recognize that your oral and dental health can have a major influence on other disease processes in your body.  It is an understanding that the mouth and the body are intimately connected; that the mouth is the opening of the gut system, which has been identified as the second brain and integral to overall health. More than 90% of all systemic diseases have oral manifestations, meaning that the dentist can play an integral role in early detection and appropriate referral.

The Focus Of Biological Dentistry

Infected Bone

I will remember that I do not treat a cavity, a cancerous growth,
but a sick human being,
whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability.

Biological Dentistry can be categorized as dentistry with a conscious.

A consciousness of how the treatments of the teeth and jaws will affect the health of the individual and how it will affect the immune system and growth in children.

Will it be congruent and health enhancing, or will the treatments be health stressors to the individual?

While periodontal disease is accepted by the medical community for its role in cardiovascular problems and diabetes, the effects of other dental conditions and materials on whole body health have yet to be extensively recognized.

However, since the mouth is the gateway to the digestive tract, it should not be surprising that what happens in the oral cavity impacts the rest of the body.

This is particularly the case in 2 scenarios:

50

Where heavy metals or toxic materials such as mercury, aluminium or BPA are placed into teeth or the jaw. These metal ions dissociate from their masses to diffuse, migrate and become absorbed in the tissues altering the electrochemical character of the immune system concomitantly changing the ratios and populations of the blood cells (decreased white cell count) and the cells of the immune system.

51

Equally important is that recognized procedures in dentistry especially  in periodontics, endodontics  and oral surgery which can allow the maintenance of populations of pathogens in internal spaces where they don’t belong, resulting compromised immune regulation, inflammation in other parts of the body or interference with natural functioning of vital organs or the promotion of growths and cancers elsewhere in the body.
